House too small, but don’t want to move? Home extensions can be a way to add more space to your current home. There are lots of different ways you can extend your home. Here are just some of the most popular home extensions that could be worth considering.

Kitchen extension

Kitchen extensions are very common. If you’ve got a tiny kitchen, such an extension could allow you to add more countertop space, cabinets or even extra appliances. You could even consider options like a breakfast bar or an island. This could be a rear extension, front extension or side extension depending on where your kitchen is located.

Additional bedroom

If you’ve got a growing family or simply want a private space for guests, adding an extra bedroom could be an extension worth considering. These extensions can significantly add value to your home. This could be a ground floor extension or an upper floor extension (which could involve building on top of a garage or on top of another single storey room).

Conservatory

Conservatories are another extension that can add a lot of value. These are extra living spaces that are designed to let in as much sunlight as possible. They can make great dining rooms, home offices or secondary living rooms. The most common place for a conservatory is the rear of the property – helping to provide views of the garden. However, conservatories can be installed on the front or side of a property.

Porch

For those with a small hallway, a porch can provide extra space to greet guests or store shoes and coats. They can also make the front of your home look more attractive by creating a grander entrance. You could consider a flat roof porch or a triangular roof porch.

Loft conversion

A lot of people use their loft for nothing but storage, however it may be possible to turn it into an extra living space such as a bedroom or a home office. You may not need to do any extending when converting a loft. However, some lofts have quite low or sharply pitched roofs, and these often need to be raised or extended with a dormer window in order to be usable.

Garage conversion

It’s also possible to convert a garage into an extra living space such as an office, bedroom or home gym. This usually involves removing the garage door and replacing it with a wall or window. Some people with small garages also like to extend the garage while converting it – this could be a horizontal extension or a vertical extension.

Basement extension

It’s also possible to extend your home downwards in some cases. Extending a small basement could allow you to turn it into an extra living space such as a bedroom, living room or gym. Basement extensions can be quite expensive due to the amount of excavation needed and the possibility of having to relocate wires and pipes. However, they could be a good solution if you have no space (or can’t planning permission) to extend above ground.
