Double glazing took off in the 1980s and has been a mainstay in homes ever since. It was an upgrade on the usual single-glazed windows, with one of the big benefits being energy efficiency. Everyone knows that double glazing makes their property more efficient – it’s essential if you want to equip your home for the cold winter months – but what else does it bring to the table?
Property experts see it as one of the best upgrades you can make, so let’s see some of the additional benefits beyond energy efficiency:
Increased Home Security
Double-glazed windows are designed to be thicker and stronger than traditional panes of glass. As a consequence, they upgrade your home’s security and make it harder for people to break in. Anyone can smash a single-glazed window with their hand wrapped in a blanket – it’s also easy for the neighbourhood kids to accidentally smash the window with a football.
That’s not the case with double-glazing. Some high-quality double-glazed windows from ZEN Windows and Conservatories will stand up to a lot of pressure and physical abuse. It is far harder for someone to force entry into your home or for an accidental object to breach it. You get peace of mind knowing that you (and your family) are safely tucked away.
A Reduction In Condensation
Older windows are prone to condensation because of the way they’re made. Single glazing is terrible at this, meaning your windows often get wet on the inside. When this happens, the wetness drips onto the window frame and causes horrific black mould – which is an absolute annoyance to clean.
The difference with double glazing is that it includes an insulating barrier between the glass panes. This prevents stark temperature differences between the outside and inside surfaces (which is part of the reason they’re so energy efficient) and can stop condensation from forming. You don’t end up with wet windows, and you don’t have to deal with black mould!
Better Noise Cancellation
The thicker your windows are, the better they’ll be at blocking noise from outside. This is particularly important if you live in a busy neighbourhood or are close to a main road. You don’t want to hear people talking as they walk past your house, nor do you want to hear traffic sounds when you’re trying to relax.
The thickness of double glazing gives you more sound protection and muffles noises from outside. When combined with acoustic curtains or blinds, you can create a truly soundproof home that feels quiet and isn’t interrupted by exterior noises.
To reiterate, every new home with have double-glazed windows – but you could be living in an older property. If that’s the case, then a double-glazed upgrade should be one of the first things to consider. Now, you could go one step further and opt for triple glazing, though it’s more expensive and doesn’t really yield any significant benefits over double glazing. That’s why new homes are still built with double instead of triple; it’s simply the smartest and most cost-effective approach to windows.
