Garages are often underused spaces. Many homeowners who have driveways prefer to park their cars there, leaving the garage as space for clutter and disorganisation.
Turning this space into something else can often be a huge benefit to your home. Not only could it free up space in the main home, but it may boost the property’s value should you come to sell in the future.
Here are four ideas which could transform your garage space into an amazing new space.

Home office haven
With many UK adults working remotely for at least part of their workweek, having a dedicated space to work from is integral.
A garage-turned-office offers a quiet and productive space away from other family members and distractions. Insulation is going to be the key to making this a successful conversion – no one wants to work in a chilly office!
You should also focus on lighting. Garages often don’t have much natural light. Of course, you can decide to add windows, but you could equally opt for clever lighting such as spotlighting as well as overhead lighting.
Cosy guest suite
Having friends and family to stay can sometimes lead to your home feeling a bit full, even though you love having guests! Transforming your garage into a self-contained guest suite still allows you to have people stay whilst affording you all the privacy you need.
Although the space may be on the smaller side, be sure to include an en-suite in your plans. Whilst this may bump up the costs, you can offset it by doing some of the decorating and finishing touches yourself.
If you don’t have people to stay regularly, there is always the option to rent it out as a holiday let. Before you do this, be sure to check local requirements as well as consider any tax changes you may face.
Personal fitness studio
Having a home gym can often be the answer for fitness fanatics who love working out but struggle to make time to go to the gym. A garage gym provides an extra layer of privacy as well as being super convenient.
Proper flooring is important in this conversion, especially if you plan on lifting weights and working on strength exercises. Home gyms often require smart installations such as weight racking on the walls rather than on stands on the floor. To maximise space, consider getting a roller garage door so you can fit everything you need in.
Playroom for the kids
Anyone with children knows that toys somehow seem to take over even the most well-organised home. Not all homes have a separate room which can be used as a playroom – this is where a garage conversion would work in your favour.
Soft flooring is a must, as kids spend a lot of time playing on the floor. You should also think about comfy seating, such as bean bags and cushions. Some families will benefit from dual-purpose furniture, such as storage benches with comfy tops.
A kids’ space is the perfect excuse to go crazy with décor. Get your little ones on board and ask them to help to choose paint colours and themes. If you are feeling brave, you could even let your budding artists have a go at painting!
