For many of us, the winter chill has well and truly set in, and homes are getting harder to heat up. However, if you’re finding it truly impossible to make your space comfortable, there’s a good chance that you might be lacking some of the winterisation essentials that should be helping you through the season. Here, we’re going to look at what you can start doing to improve your situation.
Plug Up Those Drafts
Gaps in your windows, doors, and around any maintenance access panels can cause the warm air to slowly but steadily leak out of the home, making it harder to warm up and even harder still to keep warm. Take the time to identify drafts in the seals leading outside, such as around the edges and corners of your windows. If you can find them, use weatherstripping or caulking to seal up the gaps.
Check Your Heating Systems
Most of the year, you might not think too much about your boiler or heating system and its health, but now it can become much more important. Look for a boiler service near me that can give you your annual check and make sure things are working effectively and efficiently. You should check the health of your boiler at least once a year. In the future, it’s best to do it ahead of winter, since that does tend to be the busiest time to try and get an appointment.
Up The Insulation Of Your Home
If you’re trying to keep your house super cosy this winter, then you should make sure that it’s not losing heat as fast as it can. While sealing up drafts is a good start, if your home is not thoroughly insulated, it’s only a drop in the ocean. Insulation is vital in modern homes, and not having your walls or roof insulated can mean you are spending significantly more on your heating. It can be a costly project to undertake, but you might be able to benefit from government funding that can manage those costs.
Don’t Neglect The Plumbing
Aside from being deeply uncomfortable, the severe drop in temperatures can result in new dangers to your home, such as frozen pipes. When your pipes freeze, they can burst, leading to extensive and expensive water damage. Wrap any exposed pipes in foam insulation sleeves in the winter, and be sure to disconnect your garden hose. Run the water occasionally in taps you use less often to make sure that little bits of water can’t gather in the pipes.
Look Up
There are two parts of the house about your head that need a little more attention, too. You should be sure to clean your gutters if you haven’t done it since the autumn, as clogged gutters lead to water buildup and even ice dams, which can lead to leaks and other issues. Consider organising your annual roof inspection to make sure there are no missing or damaged tiles up there, too.
Your home should keep you safe, healthy, and, most importantly right now, warm. Take the tips above into mind and make sure that your home is doing its job.
