We love food. It’s something we enjoy together, and Mario and I love cooking, it’s actually one of my hobbies! We love creating homecooked meals for all of us and have acquired a lot of cooking equipment over the years. We also love eating out and one of my favourite on-the-go lunches is sushi. However, I’ve never thought to make my own sushi and to be honest, I wouldn’t really know where to start! Its only when Kelly Loves got in touch to ask if we would be interested in looking at their Sushi Kits, that I finally took the plunge and decided to try out making my own sushi!
Kelly Loves was created by Kelly Choi a Korean who studied in Japan and then moved to Europe to launch her business Sushi Daily. Kelly Loves combines the heritage of Japanese food and Korean food, culture, and traditions and this brings their customers authentic food and recipes to enjoy at home. They sell everything from chop sticks to juice drinks, soups to snacks!
Kelly Loves kindly sent us a few of their products to try out, Ramune, Soy Sauce, Kimchi and their Ultimate Sushi Kit to try out. The first thing I love is the packaging! Its colourful bright and eye-catching! The branding is really clear and you know exactly what you’re getting! So let’s see what you actually get inside the kit:
Ultimate Sushi Kit
Inside the box you get everything you need to create your very own sushi at home. You get a bamboo rolling mat, 500g sushi rice, 7 nori sheets, sushi vinegar, spicy mayo, crispy fried onions, wasabi and a lovely Bento box with a bamboo lid that doubles as a small chopping board. The only thing you need to add is the vegetables or meat you want to include. We used carrots and cucumber to create ours.
Creating your sushi
To start you need to make the sushi rice. This is just like making your usual rice and the only extra step is waiting for it to cool down after cooking. It took 15 minutes to cook and then we added some of the rice vinegar as well as a sprinkle of salt as suggested on the box. Once the rice is cool, we then lay the nori sheet onto the bamboo rolling mat and cut in half lengthways. Put the rice onto the nori sheet making sure to leave a cm gap at the top and flatten (we used a teaspoon with a bit of oil on as it stops the rice sticking to it!).
Add your vegetables or meat and then start to roll! Cut the sushi roll into smaller rolls. We found the hardest bit was working out how much rice to use on each nori sheet and less is definitely more! Rolling the sushi is a bit of an art but we got the hang of it as we made more and more. The first couple were a bit dodgy! Make sure you have a decent set of knives as you will need them to properly julienne the vegetables and cut the sushi into smaller rolls!
We enjoyed the sushi rolled into the fried onions, with a little squirt of spicy mayo and a sprinkle of soy sauce on top! The Kimchi (spicy fermented cabbage) was a little on the hot side for me but absolutely delicious! We also enjoyed the Ramune which is a bit like lemonade and really refreshing in between mouthfuls of sushi! The Bento box is going to be really useful for lunches and is really nice quality.
If you’re looking at making your own sushi, I would absolutely recommend looking at the Kelly Loves website to get some recipe ideas and to read through the instructions. We found that the instructions on the packaging and online differs for each product slightly, so we stuck with one recipe and one set of instruction to avoid confusion. This could be a little clearer as well as the fact we tried to use the QR codes and all of them went to ‘page not found’ on the website. I was hoping to get more information about each product on these, so it was unfortunate that they didn’t work.
Although we enjoyed creating our first ever lot of sushi and it tasted absolutely delicious, you definitely need to practice, and some videos would be great to follow along to! It isn’t our last time making our own sushi so it hasn’t put us off! Kelly Loves sell everything you could possibly need to create some really lovely sushi so head over to their website and get everything you need in one place!
