The beauty of a home gym is having your own private workout haven, right? It gives you the chance to pick what machines you want. On top of that, there’s no one hogging the machines, no awkward small talk, and, best of all, no chance of starring in someone’s sneaky gym video (unfortunately those are rampant on TikTok).
But even when you’ve escaped the chaos of public gyms, keeping your home gym truly private takes a little extra effort. Here’s how to make sure your sweat sanctuary stays as personal as you want it to be.
Pick the Perfect Spot
For starters, location is everything when it comes to your home gym. You don’t want to be in the middle of the living room dodging passing toddlers or battling for floor space with the dog. The best spots are tucked away, where you’re free to grunt, stretch, or break into a dance between sets without an audience.
Actually, basements are a classic choice, but even a spare bedroom or a corner of the garage can work wonders. Now, not everyone has these, so even just a living room or bedroom that’s not exposed (such as where neighbours can see or hear you) can work out too.
But overall, the goal is to find a spot where you’re less likely to be interrupted or, worse, seen through a window by a neighbour who’s now rethinking their tea break. But overall, privacy starts with a location that works for you, not for onlookers.
Choose the Right Window Treatments
Windows are a blessing and a curse. Natural light? Amazing. Is there the possibility of someone outside catching your burpee form? Well, not so much. Big, open windows can make your home gym feel exposed, especially if your space faces the street or the neighbours’ kitchen. Sure, it might look Instagram-worthy, but that’s seriously about as far as it goes.
There needs to be some middle ground, right? Well, in this case, rather than going for drapes (which block out sunlight), it might be a good idea to look into shutter blinds instead since they let in just enough light to keep things bright while keeping prying eyes out. Plus, they look sleek, so your gym feels polished and put together.
Drown Out the Noise with Some Music
Workouts can be loud. Maybe it’s the clanging of weights, the rhythmic pounding of your treadmill, or the occasional grunt when you’re pushing through that last set. Actually some gyms don’t allow grunts, even if they’re just something that naturally comes out.
While these sounds mean you’re working hard, they can also be a little… awkward when overheard by housemates or neighbours, right? So, it helps to play music. No, not through headphones, but actually play them with the speaker (but of course talk to everyone in your house first about this).
Keep It Clean and Clutter-Free
Nothing kills the vibe of a workout like a cluttered space. If your home gym is also doubling as storage for holiday decorations, old boxes, or random junk, it’s time for a tidy-up. That’s simple enough, right? Most home gyms either have a wagon or a shelf where everything goes, so you can just easily use that as a solution.
