The ability to work from home without commuting into the office has freed up employees to drop their kids off and pick them up from school, do chores around the house, and spend more time with their families.
Some companies have even adopted four-day work weeks without reducing pay. They cite improved work-life balance and improved productivity as reasons for attracting and retaining talent.
Setting Boundaries in a Digitally Connected World
However, constant connectivity can blur the boundaries of work and personal lives. While checking your work emails from your phone is convenient, it can leave you feeling like you’re always “on” and never fully relaxing.
To fully disconnect during personal time, turn off your non-essential notifications to eliminate constant interruptions. You can also designate specific times you’ll check for emails to avoid disrupting your evenings and weekends.
Creating digital-free spaces in your home can help you find moments of peace. Keeping your bedroom device-free can be especially useful for improving sleep quality.
Leveraging Technology for Productivity and Well-being
Digital tools can help you manage work tasks and reduce stress from office distractions. Noisli, for example, is designed to block out external distractions by allowing users to mix background sounds to listen to with headphones. It offers 28 background sounds to mix, pre-made playlists, and a burnout timer to mask distracting spikes in office noise from doors slamming and beeping machines.
Headspace is a great mindfulness app designed to improve well-being. It uses guided meditations to reduce anxiety and has a work version which offers free access for all employees. Engaging in enjoyable activities like an online casino can also provide a fun way to unwind after work hours.
Prioritising Mental Health in the Digital Age
Maintaining mental well-being amidst work demands can be challenging. Burnout is incredibly common in the UK, with nine in 10 adults experiencing high stress or pressure at some point in the last year and one in three ‘always’ or ‘often experiencing it.
There are ways to combat work-related stress and prevent yourself from being spread too thin. Regular digital detoxes can be useful tools. Set aside a Saturday and go on a hike to focus on reconnecting in person with a friend you’d like to see more often.
Mindfulness is another option you can practice every day to reduce anxiety. If you’re really struggling with your mental health, seek out professional help before it gets worse.
Navigating the Social Aspects of Remote Work
While remote work can be ideal for some people, including parents of young children and those of us living with disabilities, it can lead to feelings of isolation. Maintaining social connections with colleagues can be difficult when you rarely see them in person.
Virtual team-building activities are a great way to engage with your team in a fun way. For example, start a regular virtual trivia night, say once a week or fortnight, where your colleagues quiz each other on TV shows, music, or sports. Engaging in online communities can also provide connection, whether it’s via your favourite video game or subreddit.
