I have written about reusables previously and about 18months ago made the switch to reusable make up pads, wipes for Lottie and reusable period products. It took me a while to get used to each set of products, but I can definitely see the benefit of using reusables and cutting down hugely on our plastic use!
The products that have taken me until the last few months to use are the period products. I wasn’t sure about using them solely during my periods for a long, long while. I was happy to use them at the start and end of each period but wasn’t so confident about using them all the way through. I have researched period pants for quite a while as I would love to wear them throughout my whole period, so I was really happy when Modibodi got in touch about their period underwear!
It can be tough to make the leap to reusables so I thought I would tell you a bit about how they have helped me and answer some of the questions you may have about them! Since having Lottie I have started having really bad periods and that came as a shock since I have never had problems with them before! I was worried that the reusable pads would leak, wouldn’t be comfortable or would slip out of place. I bought a set of 3 period pants while they were on offer last year and started wearing them at night-time.
Who are Modibodi and what do they do?
Modibodi launched in 2018 and are the UK’s #1 Reusable Leakproof Underwear brand and cater not only for women but also for teens and men too! They have a wide range of underwear styles and recently launched their new Maxi-24hrs range. They also range from size 8 to a size 26 which is amazing! Their underwear is designed to completely replace pads and tampons even for the heaviest of periods, providing stress-free protection when we need it most!
So, what’s the underwear made from?
The underwear is made from organic cotton, bamboo and merino wool which offers not only complete comfort while wearing but also uses proven technology to protect from leaks from front to back. Meaning you can feel protected going about your daily life, being active and also while sleeping. They also contain the latest in breathable, antimicrobial fibres with an Australian patented Modifier Technology™ which is a super slim stain-resistant lining and Modifier Air Technology™ which is a moisture-wicking, odour-fighting lining for getting sweaty. Modibodi also have a range of moisture-repellent, leakproof swimwear so you literally don’t have to give up anything when it’s your ‘time of the month!’.
Great but how do I pick which underwear style will suit me and my flow?
With such a great range available, you may be worried about picking the right underwear for you but Modibodi have you covered here too! There are 6 different absorbencies and 8 different styles; from Moisture Wicking (ideal for hot days and getting sweaty) all the way up to Maxi-24hr (which holds up to 10 tampons – very heavy flow). The website will tell you exactly which style to go for according to your flow. I was sent 2 different versions of the underwear:
Seamfree Full Brief – heavy-overnight flow. This style has a low leg finish and a high waist. I love the blue colour as I only had black before and it’s nice to have different styles! They are so comfortable on and with them being seamfree I know that I can wear them under any type of clothing I have!
Sensual Bikini – light-moderate flow. This style is higher on the leg and sits on the hip. I love this design which is called Midnight Garden. It’s so pretty and has a lovely crochet bit along the top of the pants.
Now the not so nice bit, how do I actually wash them?
Firstly, you have to remember that it’s not that yucky! This is the part I was most worried about but believe me it’s not that bad! But if you’re a bit squeamish, you may want to stick to the darker colours in the range. Remember to wash your underwear before first use as this helps to activate the modifier technology in the gusset. After that, once worn all you need to do is rinse them in cold water until the water runs clear (there is no need to soak them). I find that having a plastic box handy to pop them into when rinsed is really useful.
Then just pop them in the washing machine on a cold wash. I do mine twice a week on their own, with no fabric softener on a 20° wash and they come out perfectly every time! Don’t tumble dry them, just hang dry.
I absolutely love the Modibodi Reusable Leakproof Underwear! Not only are they comfortable to wear day to day and for whatever I’m doing but they are so good to sleep in! They stay put all night long as opposed to disposable pads, so I don’t wake up panicking about leaks! The underwear is reusable, sustainable and for me, has meant a total replacement for disposable pads and tampons. The packaging is also fully recyclable which is amazing! The underwear will easily last for 2 years if looked after properly so my current range of 5 sets of pants and 12 reusable pads will definitely keep me going for a long while!
