Choosing the wrong type of flowers is one of the biggest mistakes people make with their garden. They can’t work out why the flowers keep dying every year and it’s probably because they have chosen the wrong type for their garden conditions, so the plants are not able to survive and thrive. Every flower is different and they all have different care needs, so it’s important that you consider your garden and what kinds of flowers are likely to be happy there. If you are struggling with the flowers in your garden, these are some of the factors you need to consider when choosing which types to plant.

Sunlight

Sunlight is crucial for all plants to survive, but different flowers like different amounts of sun. Some like to be in direct sunlight all day long, while others like to be in shaded areas. There are four main classifications of sunlight you should consider when picking flowers:

  1. Full sunlight – flowers that like around 7 hours of full sunlight and hold up well under the midday sun.
  2. Partial sun – flowers that are ok in the midday sun but like some shade throughout the day.
  3. Light shade – flowers that like to be in the sun for the majority of the day but prefer some shade from leaves of trees and bushes.
  4. Partial shade – flowers that like to be in the sun for part of the day and then in full shade for the rest.
  5. Full shade – flowers that do not like direct sunlight at all and prefer to be in shaded areas of the garden.

Take a look at your garden and consider the type of sunlight you get, then pick flowers that are well-suited to those conditions. If you buy flowers from an experienced garden centre like Poplar Nurseries, you will get a lot more information about the sunlight conditions. People often go wrong when they buy flowers from places like the supermarket because they have not been kept in the right conditions and they are very unhealthy when they are planted.

Planting Times

Flowers don’t do well if you plant them at the wrong time of the year, so make sure you research when they need to go into your flower beds. A lot of flowers are best planted in the spring, so when you are making your garden preparations, you should be buying your flowers. However, don’t assume that they need to be planted in spring because that is not always the case, so make sure you double check and plant things at the right time.

Growing Size

If you don’t give your flowers enough room to grow, they will struggle to survive. Different plants require a different amount of space, so consider the area you have to work with. If you only have a few small flower beds, look for varieties that can be planted close together. However, make sure that you don’t put them too close together because this can cause a lot of problems.

Research is key when deciding what flowers to plant in your garden. Make sure you consider all of these factors when making your decision and your flowers will thrive.
