Being a mother is a full-time job. You usually have to keep your household running around the clock every day, and this can be exhausting. And, frankly, a burnt-out mum is an unhappy and unproductive mum. Even though there may usually be some guilt when you want to take a break to relieve some stress, you must do it. Fortunately, it is still possible to get some self-care done while attending to your daily activities. Here are a few self-care ideas for mums to give you the relaxation you need.
- Listen to music you enjoy.
As a mother, I am sure all the songs you listen to are those your kids also enjoy. On repeat, every day – on the way to school and on the way home. Well, one of the ideas to get some much-needed self-care is to listen to your music. Update your music collection with music you enjoy. You can create a CD or a playlist with your tunes for your car rides, when you’re out shopping or when you have some alone time at home.
- Make sleep a priority
Your routine may usually involve waking up early to get some things done before your kids wake up. By doing so, you may deprive yourself of needed sleep, which can be detrimental to your health, both physically and mentally. Having a limited amount of sleep would only make you unproductive and lead to illness. Try to get as much sleep as possible. You can hire a babysitter to help out in the house to finish chores quickly; giving you the chance to have an early night. Also, if you feel sleepy during the day, consider taking a nap.
- Look good, feel good
When you look good, you feel good. Looking good does not necessarily mean having the supermodel look. It could simply be doing things that make you happy and feel good about yourself. You can get some organic beauty products to create a simple beauty treatment regimen, or watch YouTube videos to learn some makeup tricks. You can also have DIY manicure and pedicure sessions at home, and if you can, you can go to the spa or have a masseuse come to your home to give you a massage.
- Make time for yourself
Treat yourself occasionally. You can go for social events like lunch or coffee dates with your friends, have a girl’s night out, catch a movie at the cinema, or plan weekend get-away trips with your girls. If you want a less sociable treat, you can start reading a book or join your neighbourhood’s book club- or start one.
- Take good care of yourself
Your mental and physical health is essential, and making sure it is in good condition is a form of self-care. Create a gratitude diary, listen to motivational messages, and if you need to, see a therapist. Follow a workout program and eat healthily and don’t forget to see your doctor regularly.
